The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
