British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
